Geographic Description:
Within the United States of America and Canada. The Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey is composed of two distinct survey areas: first, the traditional area, which has been surveyed in its current design since 1974 and extends from coastal Alaska through the boreal forest to western Ontario, and through the parklands and prairies south to South Dakota; second, the eastern area, which has been surveyed since 1990 and covers portions of Ontario, Quebec, Labrador, Newfoundland, the Canadian Maritimes, and Maine.

Supplemental Information:
Segments in strata 1-6 and 8-11 were 16 miles in length. Stratum 7 had 8-mile-long segments. All remaining strata had 18-mile-long segments. NULL is used for month and day when the date is unknown: there are no dates for 1955-1962, and few dates in 1963-1964. Some dates are also missing from 1965-1969 and 1992-1994. There are 285 segments that were only surveyed between 1955-1973 and an additional 121 segments surveyed only between 1974-1999. We are not certain of the location of these segments. Original segment, transect, and stratum numbering differed from our current numbering, and the documentation describing recoding does not exist. There is no contemporary spatial data associated with these data. There is one segment (210909) that appears only in 1972 and that reappears in 2002; there is no way to know if the 1972 version of the segment is the same as the later version. Between 1989-1991, stratum 19 was converted to strata 75-77. Some stratum 19 transects or transect sections continued to be flown and some were discontinued. Continued segments were recoded to their current stratum-transect-segment numbers. In 1998, eleven segments were cut from stratum 25 (including two transects) and 11 segments were added. This was done because the Saskatchewan River Delta was over-sampled relative to its representation in the stratum. Finally, in 1998 stratum 69 was created from transects 15-19 in stratum 68, but the correspondence between these transects and the current stratum 69 transects is unknown; the transects were renumbered when stratum 69 was created and no documentation exists to determine the appropriate mapping. The recording of unidentified ducks (UNDU) took place between 1955-1973. However, UNDU was not consistently used across the survey area during that timeframe. The recording of SWAN began in 1972. Males (drakes) and females (hens) of duck species can reliably be distinguished from the air while CAGO, AMCO, and SWAN cannot. CAGO are coded as drake (lone CAGO), pair, and group in order to calculate the total indicated pairs for population estimation. Drake and pair fields are coded NULL for AMCO, SWAN, and POND. Groups larger than 45 are considered to be non-breeding birds and are not included in population estimates. It is unknown if these groups were counted historically. If counted, it is unknown if they were included in the group segment totals, but we presume they were not. Lone hens are not counted. The 4-letter American Ornithologists Union species alpha codes present in this data view are: ABDU = American Black Duck, AGWT = Green-winged Teal, AMCO = American Coot, AMWI = American Wigeon, BUFF = Bufflehead, BWTE = Blue-winged Teal, CAGO = Canada Goose, CANV = Canvasback, GADW = Gadwall, LTDU = Long-tailed Duck, MALL = Mallard, NOPI = Northern Pintail, NSHO = Northern Shoveler, REDH = Redhead, RNDU = Ring-necked Duck, and RUDU = Ruddy Duck. The modified USFWS species group alpha codes in this data view are: EIDE = Eider spp., GOLD = Goldeneye spp., MERG = Merganser spp., SCAU = Scaup spp., SCOT = Scoter spp., SWAN = Swan spp., POND = Potential breeding pond, and UNDU = Unidentified Duck.
