               <para>Adult White Sturgeon Sampling Methods</para>
               <para/>
               <para>Study Area</para>
               <para>The San Joaquin River originates from the central Sierra Nevada and drains parts of the Sierra Nevada and Diablo mountain ranges. It flows 531 km, first west towards the floor of the Central Valley of California, then north towards the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, eventually reaching the Pacific Ocean. Friant Dam (river km [rkm] 431), forms a complete barrier to upstream anadromous fish passage. Downstream of Friant Dam, the river encounters increasingly greater anthropogenic influence through water diversions and habitat alteration. Sampling for White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) occurred at various locations in a 24-km reach of the San Joaquin River from Sturgeon Bend (rkm 119) to Grayson Road Bridge (rkm 143).</para>
               <para/>
               <para>Field Methods</para>
               <para>The main objective of the sampling was to capture White sturgeon for implanting acoustic tags to track their movements. As such, the sampling protocols were not suitable for analysis of abundance or other demographics. They are, however, indicative of when, where, and with what sampling gear White Sturgeon were successfully captured during the sample period from 2012-2018.</para>
               <para>Adult White Sturgeon (WST) were sampled by deploying appropriate sampling gear in non-random locations along the San Joaquin River primarily from March to early May, with isolated sampling in January, February, and October. Targeted sampling locations were relatively deep areas with slower than average flows and devoid of large, submerged debris (e.g., pools or slow side channels). Locations were based on angler recommendations, past sampling experience, and data from acoustically-tagged White Sturgeon. Gear types that were used included gillnets (n = 546 sets, 27 captured WST), drifting trammel nets (n = 1, 0 WST), fixed trammel nets (n = 785, 97 WST), and setlines (n = 5, 0 WST). In addition to fish tagged during sampling, three White Sturgeon caught by anglers were opportunistically tagged.</para>
               <para>Gillnets</para>
               <para>There were multiple sizes of gillnets used to sample adult White Sturgeon in the San Joaquin. Nets ranged from 15-61 m in length (50-200 ft) and 3-4.9 m in height (10-16 ft). Mesh size ranged from 7.6- 20.9 cm (3-9 in) and was consistent within a single net set. Gillnets were fished for short time periods, typically under 2 hours, with some sets pulled as soon as a fish was observed to be caught and others left for up to 6 hours.</para>
               <para/>
               <para>Trammel Nets</para>
               <para>Trammel nets of various sizes were used to sample White Sturgeon in the San Joaquin. Most sets were made with juvenile trammel nets (30.5-m long and 3.0-m tall with 5.1 cm inner and 20.3 cm outer panel stretch mesh) or adult trammel nets (30.5-m long and 3.7-m tall with 20.3 cm inner and 81.3 cm outer panel stretch mesh), but other sizes were opportunistically used. Trammel nets used multifilament line. Nets were fished either parallel or perpendicular to the current depending on site characteristics. All but one set were anchored and fished on the river bottom. The remaining set was allowed to drift in the current and fished from near the surface to midwater or near the bottom, depending on water depth. Trammel nets were fished for short time periods, typically under 2 hours, with some sets pulled as soon as a fish was observed to be caught and others left for up to 6 hours.</para>
               <para/>
               <para>Setlines </para>
               <para>Overnight setlines were used to catch adult White Sturgeon in 2012. Setlines were assembled from either one or two 60-m long sections of 1/4” tarred twisted rope attached together by carabiners or snap hooks and were weighted at the linkages. Setlines were anchored on the upstream-end with a Columbia-style anchor and the downstream-end with a Danforth Anchor. Every 4 or 6 m, a 3/0 circle hook baited with squid was attached with a longline snap. As no sturgeon were captured, use of setlines for adult sturgeon was discontinued after 2012.</para>
               <para/>
               <para>Environmental Data</para>
               <para>Sample effort and environmental data were collected in conjunction with adult sampling. Sample effort data consisted of starting and ending dates and times, plus latitude and longitude coordinates for individual sets. Surface measurements of starting and ending water temperature (°C; YSI Model 55 or Lowrance Structure Scan HDS 10) were frequently recorded. Habitat (i.e., eddy, pool, or run) and ambient weather conditions were also recorded for each set.</para>
               <para>Fish Processing</para>
               <para>All fish that were captured were identified to species and measured for fork length (nearest mm). Non-sturgeon species were then released, while White Sturgeon had their girth measured (mm, immediately posterior to the pectoral fins), were visually inspected for external tags, and scanned for previously implanted PIT or acoustic tags. Untagged sturgeon of sufficient size were situated in a cradle, ventral side up, with head/gills submerged in river water while a Vemco© 69 kHz acoustic transmitter (V 16, Bedford, Nova Scotia) with a 3650 d battery life was inserted into the abdominal cavity. After surgery, White Sturgeon were monitored for recovery prior to release.</para>
               <para/>
               <para>Data Management</para>
               <para>Data were recorded on paper datasheets in the field and later entered into Excel spreadsheets. After entry, electronic data were reviewed and compared with paper datasheets for accuracy. In addition, during the preparation of the included data files, environmental variable values were checked for odd or impossible values (e.g., dissolved oxygen values exceeding 20 mg/l). All coordinates were mapped to identify location errors that did not fall within the river channel. Data points that were identified as errors were again compared to the original paper datasheets and corrected or, if the correction was not apparent, the erroneous data were removed, but the rest of the data for that set (or fish) was left in place.</para>
